Injury
In the event of serious injury the boat should coordinate
with the Coastguard on Channel 16/37 or phone 999 about where
to land a casualty and meet an ambulance.
Do not move the casualty more than is necessary to ensure
their safety.
- Ensure if unconscious that their airway is clear by
loosening clothing, laying them on their side and lifting
their jaw forwards.
- Wrap them up warm, do not give food or drink,
- Immobilise injured parts if possible, especially neck
in case of head injury.
- Press firmly over bleeding points, except on a possible
skull fracture.
Assistance
- If a boat is or appears to be in danger or in need of
assistance approach the boat and enquire if they need
help.
- Stand by to assist even if they appear to be
coping.
- Do not put yourself at risk.
- Alert the RO and other boats using VHF Radio, hand
signals, flare if necessary
- The RO should contact the fleet by VHF Radio Channel
37, subsequently switching to Channel 16, the National
Coastwatch Lookout on Channel 16 and if necessary the
Coastguard (Ch 16 or Mobile phone 999).
- A decision about calling the RNLI should be made by the
race officer.
- RO should alert the club and request launch Tango, RIB
Zulu, ambulance or other assistance as required. From BP he
should ask the club to alert the Bravo driver.
- The safety of rescuing boats should not be
compromised.
Reporting
- After the event a record should be made by the RO and
OOD and those directly involved. In the event of serious
injury or damage to boats all witnesses should record their
observations.
