The RDYC Racing Programme 2010

Welcome to the 2010 sailing programme. The Racing Committee have built on the success of former years in continuing the successful Wednesday evening racing, but where support has been waning, particularly at weekends, we have radically changed the programme in response to the survey done at the prize giving in November 2009.

Yacht Racing at the Royal Dart

The Ladies Race

The Ladies Race, when a lady must be on the helm, has been moved to mid-season, 16th June, to reflect the popularity of this event.

Saturday Afternoon events

The main change is a move from Sunday morning races to Saturday afternoon, making it easier for those living at a distance. We have reduced the number of One Design races, made the cruiser races more flexible handicap races allowing varied number of crews.

Family Fun Afternoons

The idea of these is to have three or four events planned and then choose the best one on the day depending on weather: no one wants to anchor up and swim off Blackpool Sands in a force 6, when we might sail in the river. The first kicks off with a barbecue at the club as a finale to the Junior Sailing courses on July 17th and the second will be a joint event with Cruising Section on August 14th. Watch this space .... well, the club website at least.

Courses and Sailing Instructions

Courses have remained unchanged for the first time in living memory.
Sailing Instructions have been updated with minor improvements. The main one is a gate start option for club and one design races.

Race Officers

As usual, we will be calling on the racing skippers to act as Race Officers and provide one assistant for Wednesday evenings and some weekends. There will always be expert advice to help you on your way. Please do not hesitate to ask.

Registration and Results

Please use the Race Entry Forms. Download the pdf, complete and and return it now so that the results service can run quickly and smoothly and get results out on Wednesday evenings before you go home. Separate entry forms will be available for the Medical Rally and Alderney Races from the club office and from the downloads page of this website.

Crew Membership

Your crews, if not club members in their own right, should join the club as crew members for the reduced fee of £25 and enjoy the club facilities on race days and get e-mail notification of club events as well as a copy of Masthead, the club magazine. Download pdf Application Form.

White Sail Race Series

Rather than run a separate series we would extend a welcome to anyone who does not normally race to join in the racing (probably with the Slow Handicap fleet) and sail on a reduced handicap to allow for not using a spinnaker. Please submit an entry form and ensure you are covered by insurance for racing risks.

The Devon Medical Sailing Rally

On June 19th is a pursuit race open to any boat with a doctor, dentist, medical student, nurse or other health worker on board. Download details and an entry form from the downloads page. Download details and an entry form from the downloads page.

Coastal Races

Are run in association with Brixham YC, RTYC and Salcombe YC. The Lyme Bay Challenge Trophy is for the best overall RDYC boat in all these events.

The Alderney Race

Is the highlight of the coastal programme on August 7th and well worth getting a crew together for. Some of the small boat sailors may welcome a chance to literally extend their horizon.

Safety

To maintain our good safety record, check the safety equipment on your boat is in working order and that you and your crew know where it is and how to use it. Show your crew the Safety Notice and have your copy of the Emergency Action Card readily available. Course and safety information will be broadcast on Channel M1 (Channel 37).

Handicaps

Are based on the IRC system for faster yachts and all such boats are encouraged to obtain an IRC certificate from RORC , www.rorc.org. Slow Handicap boats will use the PY rating scheme adjusted according to RYA advice. Some boats may need to obtain data from other sources, such as the Byron Software Website, www.byronsoftware.org.uk to enable the Racing Committee to arrive at a provisional handicap for their boat.

Results

Are usually on the club website before the end of the day's sailing. See the Racing Results section of our new website.

The Annual Prizegiving

Will be held on 13 November 2010 and will follow the great success in 2009 with a two course dinner at 19:00 followed by the prizegiving (please book).

Future Events

The club is delighted to have been asked to host the J/80 National Championships in June 2011 and in May 2012, with the J/80 World Championships being hosted by BRNC in June 2012. The Club will host the Squib National Championships in July 2012.

And finally ...

Thanks to everyone who helps organise, run, feed and serve us on race days, to our advertisers and to all of you who compete to make it such an enjoyable experience.
